teaching myself about DNS

date: May 14 2026

my DNS knowledge has been quite fragmented. I dove deep on some things and skipped others. over the years that accumulated into a bunch of knowledge that is not efficiently connected together in my mind. it’s like I know things, but I am a little fuzzy here, a little uncertain there, and now a 4-step argument chain leads me down the road to something that I have little confidence in as uncertainty of each step compounds.

so, reading about how much better claude is at creating html files to teach concepts, I decided to try it out. it generated dozens of pages of material with demos and visualizations for me. as expected, a lot of fluff and useless nice diagrams were generated, but it was a nice baseline to jump off of. a couple iterations of re-reading and asking deeper questions, and then rewriting this a couple times on top of it, resulted in the following chapters about what DNS is and all the interesting tidbits connected to this technology.
